Before shaving

Prevention of acne after shave starts way before the shaving process itself. There are several things that one should do in preparation for the shave, some of which are given below;

Practice high hygiene and sanitation levels

It is crucial to wash one's hands before touching the face or any other area to be shaved. Doing so prevents the transfer of germs and bacteria from the hands to the face and any other body part, limiting the chances of aftershave acne.

Application of a toner

It is essential to apply a toner before shaving as it gets deep into the skin pores and cleans out any dirt, and grim responsible for causing acne. It is, therefore, ideal for medicating acne before it sprouts.

Light exfoliation

It is also vital to get rid of all the dead skin cells before shaving as it gives one a closer shave and cleans the part to be shaved, thereby minimizing the transfer of bacteria and acne pop up. One can either use a wet washcloth greased with beard oil or gentle face/body scrub during exfoliation, which should be done not just before shaving but at least once a day as well.

Do a hot towel treatment on the face

Moisturizing the skin and opening up pores using a warm and moist towel in readiness for a shave is another useful trick to preventing acne. Always extend the treatment from the face down to the neck.

Splashing warm water on the face

It opens up the pores and softens the skin, making it easier to shave and minimize irritation chances, unlike cold water that maximizes irritation and acne.

Practice effective face washing routine

Washing the face regularly, for instance, twice a daily, prevents aftershave acne. It is also advisable to wash the face anytime it gets sweaty or dirty. One should also invest in products that contain salicylic acid as they are known to prevent acne.

Use a pre-shave oil

While pre-shave oils do not prevent acne directly, they soften the skin, even fighting bacteria and helping the razor glide effortlessly along the skin. The results include less ingrown hairs, irritation, and redness, and therefore less acne as well.

Use a beard wash

Quality and suitable beard wash can also help to prevent acne after shaving.

During the shave

  • Use shaving gels/creams that give a thin layer of protection: Dry shaves and improper shaving creams/gels are among the vast acne causes after shaving as they irritate the skin.

Always choose gentle, non-irritating shaving creams and gels that suitable for sensitive skin.

  •  Apply the shaving cream/gel using a shaving brush: Using hands to apply the cream mats down the hair to the surface, which pushes the dirt more in-depth into the skin.

On the contrary, the shaving brush offers rich lather, exfoliates the skins, and helps the hairs stand, making them easier to cut with minimal irritation.

  • Shaving with a light hand as too much pressure causes irritation and acne later on.

  • Take time when shaving to avoid cuts, nicks, and irritation.

  • Shave in the same direction that the hair grows to minimize irritation.

After shaving

  • Moisturize the face: avoid using aftershaves and any products with alcohol to prevent irritation. Aloe and baby oil are the best options.

  • Use quality aftershave balms to remove any bacteria after shaving.

  • Use face masks regularly to reduce oils and tighten pores.

Other tips for preventing aftershave acne

  • Control your stress levels as stress is a significant cause of acne.

  • Avoid touching or picking at the face.

  •  Minimize sugars and unhealthy fats as well as any other nutritional contributors to acne. Drinking lots of water is also crucial.
